Unearthed: Floyd Campbell - Bank Walls EP
Posted in Unearthed
After breaking onto the scene last year with his debut EP Drifted, Los Angeles native Cam Floyd aka Floyd Campbell is finally back for his second outing on Samo Sound Boy and Jerome LOL's BODY HIGH imprint with the six-track Bank Walls EP. Picking up right where Drifted left off, Bank Walls delivers yet another satisfyingly original cocktail of dancefloor juice, blending abstract soundscapes with more traditional club tendencies into a concoction that’s all its own.
Opening on a high, the EP’s title track “Bank Walls” floats in effortlessly atop a pixelated synthline reminiscent of an old Willie Burns joint, dipping briefly below the clouds for a woozy break before climbing back to cruising altitude. Any notation that this ride would be strictly smooth sailing though gets thrown out the window by the next tune “Catch Vapyrs”, which sees Floyd provoke howling atmospherics with a sinister house stomp that haunts like the build up to a killing scene. Although these are the same kind of obtuse ideas we found on Drifted, this time around Floyd seems more focused on fitting them into club ready formats, and so far the pieces to the puzzle fit perfectly. Next up is “Lentix”, which along with sounding like something the Night Slugs fam would rinse out relentlessly in a set, morphes with a myriad of shapes and temperatures that warrant full attention for the entire six-minute journey. Just as we were getting comfortable with Bank Walls’ vigor, Floyd breaks up the pace on "Stretch" and “4tha July”, opting for a more syncopated beat and lacing them with more chilled-out tones. In what is the big finish, the EP’s last track “Tension” brings in the dancefloor mentality once again, offering a supremely rhythmic drum section and nosediving bassline that just begs for a funky midrange to be beatmatched with.
All in all, Bank Walls proceeds as one of the most solid and well-rounded releases we’ve experienced so far in 2013, providing the right amount of boom needed to get a dancefloor jumping yet enough complexity to keep you intrigued long after the rave is over.
