Introduction

Dropping Gems

Detroit, New York, LA, London, Ibiza, and Berlin all loom large in the world of dance music—but Portland, OR has managed to hold its own. The city gave us Philip Sherburne, the high priest of electronic music writing, and has recently fostered a vibrant community of dance music visionaries, from the lo-fi house throwbacks leaking out of the Ecstasy Collective to the swirling indie bass jams offered up by the Dropping Gems crew. The latter group has been gearing up to release a new EP from Natasha Kmeto, a Portland-based singer/songwriter and beatmaker, titled Dirty Mind Melt. The new release finds Kmeto delving into dance music like never before, so we tapped her for a mix to find out what's inspired her to get in touch with her inner rave bb. She reported back with a dizzying sweep through the low end, pulling out tracks from recent LFTF mix-maker Obey City as well as sputtering hip-hop remixes from Machinedrum and booty bass house cuts from the Dirtybird crew.
