Codeine Cups paint a picture so vivid

With the release of his recent Escape Pod EP on KEXP DJ Alex Ruder's Hush Hush Records, and the announcement of his induction into 2013's edition of Red Bull Music Academy, DJ/producer Joey Butler aka Kid Smpl has triggered a sizable buzz for himself over the past few months, churning out first-class remixes and originals at an expedite rate and becoming a regular face on places such as The Fader and XLR8R. When it comes to Kid Smpl's productions, ghostly vocal samples, looming ambient synths, and trembling sub-bass textures are the name of the game, and for the 22-year-old's LFTF Mix, we see these shadowy themes amplified even more. Clocking in at just under one hour, the mix presents a healthy portion of chopped & screwed edits of post-dubstep greats as well as his own dynamic soundscapes. Jamie xx's still remarkable "Far Nearer" gets decelerated to an ominous crawl, allowing for those lingering steel drums to resonate even more. The hypnotizing sounds of Burial also get the screw treatment—once at the beginning with "Loner" and again towards the end with "Kindred"—perhaps as a way for Kid Smpl to subliminally show listeners exactly where his inspiration comes from. Toward the middle of the mix and on through the end, we are graced with some exclusive new material from the man himself, leaving us with exciting glimpses of what is still to come from the evolving artist.

Kid Smpl's LFTF Mix comes in promotion for his appearance at our official Decibel Festival showcase in Seattle later this month. For more information, head over to LFTF's showcase page on the Decibel website.
