THE PARADOX OF ASKING A MASKED MAN WHO HE IS

A few weeks back, Local Natives released “Breakers”, the lead single off their sophomore LP, Hummingbird. The song fits perfectly into the indie rock cannon, sounding both immediately classic excitingly fresh.  I went as far as to call Local Natives the saviors of indie rock, based solely on the strength of the single and the band’s first LP.

The video for breakers is just as brilliant. The short starts out unassumingly, playing heavily on the well established formula of one part shots of the band playing, one part artsy underwater footage, and two parts people doing ratchet shit in masks. Director Jaffe Zinn is no slouch; he plays brilliantly with chiaroscuro to draw truly gorgeous results from a thoroughly played out template. Give the video a go below. Keep an eye out around 2:15, when an otherwise normal video is thrown into a a tailspin of post-modern, surrealist bliss.
