Premiere: Leibniz- In der Bar

A Hazy Night Out With My Friends
There's a certain melancholic beauty that radiates from the cover of German producer Leibniz' debut EP on Fairplay Records. Autumnal trees laying bare and blurry in the background, the artist stuck in concentrated motion on his skateboard, rocking a loose-fitting sweater that might have a few years of wear to it, a set unassuming labels topping off the picture.
The image reflects in Leibniz' music. The three-piece of tunes featured on his self-titled record, due out February 6, is a thoroughly subtle affair, immersive in its organic soundscape, calm but always driven, contently sitting on the edge between the happy and the sad. Starting off with the fairly straight-forward four-to-the-floor house shuffler "Allee," the EP takes a formally different turn on "In der Bar," cranking up high-hat frequency and low-end thump alike, all the while striking a similar emotional chord. The final track, "Monatskarte," picks up on the found sound snippets introduced on "In der Bar," instilling a cool intimacy, lowers the tempo and puts the 808 sounds front and center. By the time the needle lifts up, you've lost the sense of how long you've been listening to Leibniz. Good records do that to you.
We asked Leibniz to premiere one of his EP cuts with us and to answer a few questions for the sake of introduction.
Who are you and how did you get into producing music?
My name is Moritz, I'm 22 years old, I live in Leipzig and I'm producing music as „Leibniz“. My family is very musical, so i had to learn the piano very early. Ever since I first started listening to punk music, I always wanted to be in a band or at least do something on my own. One Christmas I got a multi fx pedal for my guitar. It came with a really shitty version of cubase, but for me it was enough to record some songs. I also listened to a lot of Hip Hop at that time, so I did a lot of crappy beats. That's how I got into producing music.
What is the inspiration/story behind "In der Bar"?
I did „In der Bar“ when I had just moved from my very small hometown Dillingen an der Donau in Bavaria to Berlin. I guess the inspiration was this overwhelming range of really good art and music events. When you grow up in a small and boring town and then move to Berlin it' really comes close to a cultural shock. I tried to capture the vibe of a hazy night out with my friends.
What are you working on currently?
Right now I'm working on some tracks, but nothing special. I'm also trying to create a live set with the gear I have. It would be great to get a new release soon. This whole thing with Interviews is really new to me, by the way. But it's fun.
Where do you see yourself at the end of 2013?
With a second release under my belt and having passed all my exams at university.
What's your jam at the moment?
Uh, that's a hard one. On lazy sundays I listen to the the self-titled LP from „1991“ on repeat. My friend Dj Dingo Susi just released his second EP on Dracula Horse. I love his music. Almost every release on The Trilogy Tapes Label. I also danced to a lot TNGHT and Blawan last year. It's hard to decide which one is my favourite at the moment.
