Nick Hook: Without You (EP Stream)

​The features on Nick Hook's Without You EP already tell you a big part of his story. The Gaslamp Killer, El-P and Machinedrum all do the honors on this free project released through Scion Audio Visual, demonstrating the respect level that the NY-based producer and DJ can count on among his peers. As a part of Cubic Zirconia and Drop the Lime, Hook has mostly kept his own name in the background until now, but his production skills are undeniable. The razor-sharp synths he draws up on every one of the 7 songs (excluding the 2 interludes) are backed by equally abrasive rhythmic skeletons ranging from deep, hazardous vocal house ("4XS"), to krautrock experiments ("Call Me"), post-punk ("It's a Sin"), dubby jungle ("Medium Rare"), killer techno ("On Y Va") and synthetic hip-hop ("Sirens"). An intriguing listen.
