Miles: Faint Hearted (LP Stream)
Posted by Anthony Obst
With the release of Andy Stott's Luxury Problems LP, the long-standing left-field dub techno institution Modern Love propelled itself into new realms of visibility late last year. Going beyond the cultist following they were able to amass through releases from Demdike Stare, Deepchord/Echospace or Claro Intelecto, the label run by the folks behind Boomkat have rarely had this much attention cast unto them going into a new calendar cycle.
Following 12"s from Rainer Veil and Demdike Stare, Faint Hearted represents the most notable release so far this year for Modern Love. As one half of Demdike Stare and Pendle Coven and well-respected DJ dignitary, Miles Whittaker's name carries some serious weight in his field - a field characterized by a forlorn soundscape of abrasive analog noise chunks, subtle and eery melodies, and alternately throbbing and dislocating waves of sub bass. Faint Hearted is Whittaker's first full-length release to date, an opus ambitiously ranging from washes of dark ambiance to deeply buried grooves, clanging percussion and claustrophobic shards of broken techno. An uninviting, yet utterly fascinating journey into electronic music's darker territories that is currently streaming in full via Modern Love's Soundcloud page to coincide with its official release. Best consumed at night or better yet in a crypt awaiting your own resurrection.
