J. Alvarez: Overseas Highway EP

"K-HOLE HOUSE"

J. Alvarez is a DJ/producer from Seattle, not a reggaeton singer from Puerto Rico. Sometimes he goes by the name 214, but not when he is making deep house tunes for Hypercolour, the go to label for deep house coming out of the UK these days. After releasing stellar EPs from Mosca, Huxley, Groove Armada, and Tom Flynn this year, Hypercolour has taken to their vinyl-only HypeLTD imprint to release J. Alvarez's excellent Overseas Highway EP. The four tracks from the EP fit perfectly into the "k-hole house" sound (as Michael Washington likes to call it) of the rest of the label with "Ship Canal" being the stand out track. Even though the only highways I've ever driven on overseas were in Spain and Canada, there is something about these songs that seem perfect for long, all night car rides that begin in one destination and end in another. The first three tracks, especially, feel like they were built with a dark open road in mind.
