Bobby Champs: Drag Queen EP

TECHNO > DRUGS
If I ever write some Thought Catalog-type bullshit (shudder), it'll probably be about all the reasons why I occasionally drunk tweet angrily about Cat Marnell (and then, more often then not, delete the tweets later). I'm pretty sober right now, so I won't go into it, but a tune on UK talent Bobby Champs' Drag Queen EP pushes that same button I have. The song in question, "Charlie," has a semi-obnoxious and kinda-funny vocal sample that repeats the phrase "Doing drugs, selling drugs" over a deadpan techno clomp. As someone who spent prom night smoking Oxycontin off a tin foil, it usually strikes me as pretty fucking stupid to make something as mundane and infuriatingly immature as doing or selling drugs the focus of any kind of creative effort (references to weed are often exempt, ie. Madvillainy). More often than not, my reactions to that kind of thing can be expressed in the following GIFs:

However, "Charlie" is such a tight tune that I'm willing to forgive the flatface-inducing nature of its lyrical content—and I mean, at least it's not that abysmal excuse for a sympathetic, insightful, or understanding artistic effort, "Crack Rock." The song's punchy, bouncing beats and headhigh intensity match the other tracks on the EP, which was released this week on the British outpost Pictures Music. You can stream "Charlie," along with the other three tunes on the Drag Queen EP, below.
