Damn man, 2011 was a fucking insane year for music. So much innovative stuff, not only in the underground but seeping through the mainstream as well. Kanye & Jay diving into dubstep? Drake hooking up with SBTRKT? Rihanna sampling The XX? These are things no one could’ve forecasted at the beginning of the year, and it just goes to show there are no limits anymore. Gone are the days of having to sound exactly like everything else in order to gain stardom. And to be honest, it’s actually the other way around now. Think about it. The best albums/songs to emerge from this year were ones that couldn’t be wrapped in a pretty bow and called “hip-hop” or “dubstep” or “rock” or “r&b”. Artists who said, “To hell with what’s been done in the past, I’m going to create my own lane,” were the ones who prevailed, showcasing that you don’t need a million dollar record deal or a major league co-sign to get people to notice you…just a good, unique sound. Creativeness was at an all time high in 2011, making for one of the best years in music in recent memory. With that said, we give you our absolute favorite albums of 2011. Enjoy.

The new year is just around the corner and for LFTF this can mean only one thing: end of the year posts. This year, before we give you our complete summary of favorite albums/songs/music videos (which will be dropping later this week), we’ve decided to shake things up a bit and let our staff tell you on a more personal level what 2011 in music meant to them. With creativity in mind and limitations nonexistent, we asked each member of the LFTF team to give us their own lists of favorites outside of the traditional albums/songs/music videos.
