THOM YORKE INVADES BRITISH RADIO

One of our favorite musicians, Thom Yorke of Radiohead, took time in the last week to visit two of our favorite radio shows, the Gilles Peterson Worldwide show on BBC Radio 1 and Mary Anne Hobbs’ Music: Response show on Xfm. For the Gilles Peterson show, Thom came into the studio and sat down with Gilles (pictured at right) for a two hour session of playing tunes. In between playing tunes from the likes of Jai Paul and Thundercat as well as premiering the Jamie xx remix of Radiohead’s “Bloom,” Thom took time to discuss music, Berlin, TKOL1234567, Jazz, Radiohead’s forthcoming tour, and the debut album from Thom’s other band Atoms for Peace. You can stream/download this 2 hour journey through Thom Yorke’s head in it’s entirety below.

Last week Thom also did an excellent 25 minute mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ new Music: Response show on Xfm. As part of the mix Thom debuted “The Twist,” a new, unreleased solo track. Stream the mix below.

Radiohead have also announced two shows to be played on September 28th and 29th at Roseland Ballroom in NYC. Tickets for that go on sale on September 26th at 10am EST. More info about that can be found here.

WAVVES- NODDING OFF

Wavves‘ newest EP is due September 20th. On “Nodding Off”, they, with the help of their frontman’s dreamy girlfriend (Bethany from Best Coast), get punky and happy. This is one of those tunes you can be pissed-off-at-the-world-not-giving-two-shits-and-a-giggle-about-anything-or-anyone and listen to. You’ll find your head bouncing while swaying side to side. You’ll be stupid and annoyed, but oh so happy.

BATTLES (FEAT. GARY NUMAN)- MY MACHINES

Battles will release their new single “My Machines”, featuring the vocal talents of Gary Numan, today. It’s available on colored 12” and download with new song “A.M. Gestalt”. ”My Machines” is a mighty collision of “stern, piston drums, guitar notes scattering like frightened crickets” (NME) and “an album highlight” (Uncut). As guest vocalist Gary Numan explains: “Working with Battles was an easy choice for me. They have a unique approach to making music and a clear idea of what they want. They are inventive, adventurous, unpredictable and I’m proud to be involved.” (via)

CARTER TANTON- MURDEROUS JOY

posted by Jonathan in Folk, Rock

There’s something wonderful about the fall atmosphere. It’s joyous, indulging, and spirited. There’s also a stellar transformation. The earth gets less green as it dies for the winter. On November 1st, Carter Tanton will release Free Clouds. Tanton captures the beauty of fall on “Murderous Joy”, the first song released from the album. It has fall written all over it. Picture grabbing your light coat and pedaling your bike along the road with friends. Or driving the convertible, top down, sunglasses on, and music blasting.

HELLA- YUBACORE

Here at LFTF we try not to insert ourselves into posts by avoiding the first person tense. I’m going to have to put that aside for this post in particular. Once upon a time, I played guitar in numerous hardcore melodic bands. We mimicked the likes of Glassjaw (1, 2) and Thursday (1, 2), just to name two. Many consider this type of music repugnant, and rightly so. It’s aggressive, obtuse, disruptive, sometime depressing, and downright loud. There are, however, many redeeming factors. The genre features actual instruments and musicians demonstrating years of dedication and mastery over something other than a machine. They have to trust each other to maintain their respective parts; a good band is nothing without trust. Sometimes it creates harmonies that send chills down one’s spine. They can swell to overwhelming proportions and water eyes. Most of all, it’s the most fun to play and watch live. With that said, I’m posting something a little unusual.

Hella is a storied band out of Sacramento, California. They emerged in 2001 with a short-lived record and soon thereafter the band dismantled. One year later, however, they reemerged in awesome fashion with a rocking LP. Fast forward to the now, fans like me have been dying for something new. After a four year break, the experimental and noise rock band is back. They will release Tripper on August 30th. One of the tracks to surface from the record is “Yubacore”. Enjoy.
