Baauer is the latest installment to our LFTF Mix series
Let’s get straight to the point–Baauer makes hip-hop beats on steroids. Sheer trap-drenched tracks with otherworldly sounds and spine-chilling bass-isms that make you want to shout in your deepest DJ-drop voice, “Damn son, where’d you find this??“ As the story goes, the 22-year-old Brooklyn native got his start some eight years ago producing mainly house and electro tunes before eventually turing his love to hip-hop/rap instrumentation. This interesting transition gave Baauer a unique outlook on how to approach his new productions, and inspired the simple yet effective formula: capture the explosive energy of house, electro, etc. and put it in a hip-hop format.
Fast forwarding to today, Baauer now reaps a Soundcloud page with a plethora of trap-infused club anthems, a spot in the Brooklyn music collective Trouble & Bass, and–most recently–a Hudson Mohawke and Lunice co-sign. At their debut TNGHT performance during SXSW a few weeks ago, the two dropped Baauer’s immense tune “DumDum” within their much-hyped-about set.
After featuring the man numerous times in our Weekly Dose of Bass installments, we’ve finally summoned Baauer for a proper LFTF Mix. Below, stream/download his 30-minute set for us, which features a truckload of new Baauer material as well as some of his most beloved bass-tinged treasures.

19-year-old production wizard Melérecently brought his DJ talents to the Annie Mac Show on Radio 1, curating together a set for Annie’s mini-mix series. Although only 6-minutes long, Melé manages to squeeze a whopping 33 tracks into the mix, all of which can be viewed here. Highlights for me: Melé’s mind-bending “What’s The 411″ mixed into “Percolator”, a Bobby Brown track straight into a Janet Jackson joint, and the including of a Riff Raff track–major style points there. Remember those two young blokes from Lancaster that we told you about just two short days ago ?? You know, Bondax, the kids that gave us the excellent “All Inside” for the price of nothing. Well, over the weekend Mary Anne Hobbs offered them the opportunity to debut a mix on her Xfm show by saying, “Bondax, this is your time, step up!” and damn did they deliver with a #RARE 24min mix. The mix shows that they are just as talented at DJing as they are at producing tunes. The beatmatching in this mix is top notch and the song selection is just as good. Take 24min out of your day to download this mix below (by clicking on the download button in the SoundCloud player) and give it a listen. Hell, rinse it for all of your friends too, because I’m sure they’ll give you a pat on the back after you play this one for them.

Our introduction to Kill Frenzy came when everyone from Brodinski to A-Trak to even Skrillex dropped his “Booty Clap” tune on Holy Ship back in January, so you know we had to keep our ears peeled for any KF releases in the future. No new releases just yet, but we do have this hour and 30 minute mix the Belgian producer recently dropped in promotion for his label’s upcoming Dirtybird ‘Hatched’ Tour. The mix kicks off with chunky bass numbers and then dives in and out of deep house and pure booty shaking madness. Download/stream it now below. dirtybird Mix – Kill Frenzy by Point Blank
As another Saturday passes, another Essential Mix is rinsed by one of the world’s best DJs. This past Saturday saw Dutch badman and 3024 labelhead Martyn take the reigns for BBC Radio 1′s Essential Mix. Martyn is perhaps best known for mixing the sounds of Techno and Dubstep with the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Great Lengths. Last year Martyn followed up his debut LP with his 2nd LP Ghost People, which saw a release on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label.
Martyn’s Essential Mix embodies what we’ve come to expect from the DJ/producer with both his own productions and his past mixes– a flawless mix of forward thinking bass music, contemporary house, Berlin techno and experimental jawns from the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never and Actress. Standout tracks from the mix include a new Jacques Greene tune, which is forthcoming on 3024, and a HUGE remix by Night Slugs dons L-Vis 1990 and Bok Bok of Martyn’s “Bauplan.” Stream/download the mix below.

Within the highly fragmented world of bass music there is one niche sound that I particularly enjoy and that is the UK Garage-tinged take on house music of George FitzGerald and his label ManMakeMusic. The third release from George’s label comes from Portugal native Trikk and in true ManMakeMusic form it is, “driven by relentless techno drums yet softened at points with a smattering of twisted garage vocals.” The Jointly / I Fall Down EP comes out on March 26th, but in the meantime ManMakeMusic have taken to their Mixcloud page to have Trikk showcase his DJ skills. ManMakeMusic Mix001 is a 35 minute mix of deep vibes that is just as good to chill out to at home as it is to dance to at your favorite night club. Stream the mix via the Mixcloud player below and enjoy.
This year, we have taken SXSW on by the horns, and have dabbled our LFTF name onto a few awesome events and parties–not to mention our very own LFTF SXSW Showcase. One party that LFTF has a hand in that we are probably most excited for is Broken Teeth Crew‘s absolutely monstrous South By Showcase. Featuring probably the most stacked line-up in all of SXSW as far as future electronic music goes, the party goes down Thursday, March 15th at Plush ATX from 1-8PM.
The one and only Tom Richman–who will be playing the showcase–teamed up with us and Broken Teeth to present an exclusive mixtape featuring all the artists who will have a hand in Thursday’s event. With that said, the mix presents 19 tracks from the likes of Machinedrum, Brenmar, Clicks & Whistles, Cedaa, MORRI$, and much much more. Download it now below and RSVP for Thursday’s showcase here.
