After just a day to sit down with this release it seems apparent that BadBadNotGood, who recently was announced as the official Coachella “resident jazz band”, is most definitely worthy of that title. Their second EP BBNG2 is nothing short of excellent. Besides its flawless selection of covers of some of music’s most current artists from James Blake to Earl Sweatshirt to Kanye West, it’s filled with five of their very own tracks that are great all on their own. Specifically “UWM”, a six minute saxaphone/piano jam session over one of the best bass lines I’ve heard in quite some time. You can download “UWM” and the rest of the EP for free on their bandcamp page.
“No one above the age of 21 was involved in the making of thisalbum, it was created by a bunch of kids. This album was recorded in one 10 hour session with no song having morethan two takes, it was mixed and mastered completely by ourselves. Thanks to our friends, family, loved ones and anyone who fucks with us.”

This post is going to expose my inner nerd. I was listening to NPR this past Saturday evening, and they had on a very interesting guest. The moderator opened with the following quote, and I paraphrase, ‘Robert Glasper is a man that believes jazz has hit a wall… that it can even sometimes get boring. To remedy his perception, Glasper throws a bunch of styles together but maintains the general jazz overtone.’ I was so excited by just this description coupled with the credibility of NPR that I immediately whipped out my phone and texted Mike Wash, Benlander, and Aaron. My energy wasn’t met with nearly the same amount of enthusiasm, and to be honest that kind of worried me. Fast forward two days, and I don’t know what my dudes were smoking (yes I do). I’ve been listening to this prodigy every second of the past couple of days; his smooth, mellow, and experimental tones have literally consumed me. His newest album, Black Radio, drops TOMORROW. I highly encourage all of you to splurge for it here. You’re also going to want to watch the video below… it features some crazy surprise guests flopping all over Mos Def’s “Umi Says”.
Salva and Teebs had their turn earlier this month remixing tunes off Shlohmo‘s latest effort Vacation, and now it’s Nicolas Jaar‘s. As expected, the result is nothing short of amazing–a wonderfully tranquil take on Shlo’s already gorgeous piece. Check the remix out now below, as well as an additional recent Nico Jaar piece, “With Just One Glance”, which features vocals from Scout LaRue, who is famously known as the daughter of Bruce Willis.

Amsterdam-based producer Saux has been a long time fan of LFTF. I don’t think we’ve ever posted something about him before, and it’s a little dumfounding as to why to be honest. This dude dabbles in the arenas of funk, soul, jazz, and sample-based beat electronica. His newest endeavor is Rear Window EP, which starts off with a solid jazzy track accented by the soul and jazz-laden vocals of Joya Mooi. You can download the entire EP from his bandcamp for free.
Yesterday, Ghostly released Shigeto‘s mini-LP Lineage. This record demonstrates his unflinching respect for jazz, hip-hop, funk, and folk constructions. There’s something here for everyone to like. Ghostly says it best when describing Shigeto’s masterpiece, “Each song is a complex constellation of sounds and ideas, but his compositional focus and restraint grounds songs that are otherwise cosmically inclined.”
It’s also a familial occasion for the experienced producer. The front cover displays a picture of Shigeto’s great grandfather’s house from the early 20th century in Hiroshima. The back cover is a picture of his great grandfather during his time at an internment camp in Colorado. Truly personal indeed.
This record is beautiful to the point that it will take your breath away. It’s layered with delicate and intricate textures that combine to create something way more appealing than the sum of its parts. The record is streaming courtesy of The Fader. You can purchase it from Ghostly International.
It’s an unusually frigid day today in Miami and there’s nothing better than to enjoy the cold weather with some instrumental jazzy hip-hop from Ljones. Treat yourself to the free download from Cult Classic Records here.
