Last Thursday, YSBLT artist Grimes hosted a Boiler Room party in London and like any other Boiler Room party it was broadcast for the world to see over the internet. The funny thing about Grimes’ Boiler Room party was that she invited Blawan to play out a set during it, the same Blawan that she was tweeting about not being able to listen to without having an orgasm at the end of March. While there is no proof of Grimes having an orgasm during Blawan’s latest Boiler Room set (his best yet), if you cut to the 25min mark of the video of the set you will notice a certain pink haired Canadian #seapunk standing right behind the DJ going ham and queso to this (excellent) dubplate. We’d be lying if we didn’t tell you that we were similarly amped while watching this set live from our respective homes last week. Watch the set below and download it here.
Pariah is best known for 2010′s “Detroit Falls,” his Dilla-tinged, bass-infused beat that had heads on either side of the pond spinning for months after it’s initial release. He followed up his “Detroit Falls” single with the excellent Safehouses EP on R&S Records that same year. Since then, Arthur Cayzer has been working alongside Blawan as part of Karenn, the hard hitting techno duo from London that we’ve covered here in the past. Now, Pariah is back with a new release on R&S, his first since 2010. RS1207 is the only title we have for the EP at the moment and a release date for it is still unannounced. “Rift” is the opening track from the release and you can stream a clip of it below. Here are some comments from Pariah’s Soundcloud page for the track in case you are still on the fence about taking 4min out of your day to rinse it: “heavy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,” “wow. very unique sound in this track. it baffles your senses,” “jesus,” “never heard anything quite like that,” “This track makes my brain flip inside my skull…amazing,” and “I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited for a release as this.”
Back in January Al Green (great name, right ??) aka Boddika sat down with Junoplus to discuss his ongoing collaborative process with Peter O’Grady aka Joy Orbison (pictured above). “We’re veering off into a slightly different direction. We didn’t want the music we’re writing to sound like what we’re known for as individuals and that’s been a bit of an effort, so over the last five months we’ve been in the studio just taking our time with things…the new stuff is a little housier, but by no means generic at all.”
Sometimes hard works pays off, and after 5+ months in the studio together Boddika & Joy Orbison are set to release a brand new 12″, their second collaborative effort for Sunklow. “Dun Dun” b/w “Prone” is by no means generic. “Dun Dun” has shuffling percussion with a pulsating, almost industrial bassline and a house-inspired chord progression, making it one of the deepest riddims to come from the pair to date. The b-side, “Prone,” is a little more minimal and is more fit to be rinsed out on the dance floor rather than to be played in the privacy of a home. The vinyl only release can be purchased over at Rubadub now. Preview the tunes below.
Our introduction to Kill Frenzy came when everyone from Brodinski to A-Trak to even Skrillex dropped his “Booty Clap” tune on Holy Ship back in January, so you know we had to keep our ears peeled for any KF releases in the future. No new releases just yet, but we do have this hour and 30 minute mix the Belgian producer recently dropped in promotion for his label’s upcoming Dirtybird ‘Hatched’ Tour. The mix kicks off with chunky bass numbers and then dives in and out of deep house and pure booty shaking madness. Download/stream it now below. dirtybird Mix – Kill Frenzy by Point Blank
Over the weekend Hotflush boss Scuba went behind the decks for his first full length Essential Mix. This one starts out slow, but builds up to an intense climax as it continues on and features new tracks from Boddika and Guy Andrews alongside Scuba’s flawless beatmatching skills. The mix made it’s debut just in time for the release of Scuba’s excellent new LP, Personailty. Buy the album right now over at boomkat and download/stream the latest Essential Mix below.

UK super producers Boddika and Joy Orbison (pictured above), fresh off of the release of the 12″ of the moment with “Swims,” are back again with the collaborative tracks “Froth” b/w “Mercy.” Set for release on February 21st via Sunklow, this 12″ features two pulsating techno tunes that are bound to strike a chord with bassheads on either side of the Atlantic. Stream both tracks below and pre-order the vinyl over at Rubadub.
Mary Anne Hobbs rounded out the year at her Xfm show by inviting some of 2011′s most exciting producers/DJs to contribute mixes including the likes of Scuba, Mosca and Swamp81 label head Loefah. However, the most interesting mix of the lot comes from Karenn, the collaborative project between UK Bass producers/DJs Blawan and Pariah. Every new release or mix from Karenn and/or Blawan has seen the artists showcase a new direction for their sound. Blawan’s latest 12″, Peaches, was pulsating industrial goodness, while the Karenn 12″, SHEWORKS001, was a simultaneous mixture of bass heavy UK Garage, techno and house music. What better way to see what new direction UK Bass music might take in 2012 than with a next level mix from some of scene’s luminaries of 2011. Stream the mix below and enjoy.
