TRIKK: MANMAKEMUSIC MIX001

Within the highly fragmented world of bass music there is one niche sound that I particularly enjoy and that is the UK Garage-tinged take on house music of George FitzGerald and his label ManMakeMusic. The third release from George’s label comes from Portugal native Trikk and in true ManMakeMusic form it is, “driven by relentless techno drums yet softened at points with a smattering of twisted garage vocals.” The Jointly / I Fall Down EP comes out on March 26th, but in the meantime ManMakeMusic have taken to their Mixcloud page to have Trikk showcase his DJ skills. ManMakeMusic Mix001 is a 35 minute mix of deep vibes that is just as good to chill out to at home as it is to dance to at your favorite night club. Stream the mix via the Mixcloud player below and enjoy.

ARTIFACT & THEFFT- COW HOP

Bristolian producer/DJ of the moment Artifact (pictured above), who was featured as a “Breaking Through” artist on Resident Advisor last week, and recent Mary Anne Hobbs mix contributor Thefft have combined forces to produce a monster Dirtybird-esque track called “Cow Hop.” No word on when or where it will see a release, but it debuted on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Xfm show last weekend and it is too good of a tune to not share with the lot of you. Artifact is set to see a release on Tom Lea’s Local Action Records soon, while Thefft is in the midst of prepping a release for Distal’s Embassy Recordings. Keep your eyes peeled for these two names as even bigger TINGS should be coming from them in the near future.

GROOVE ARMADA: NO KNOCK EP

posted by Benlander in Electronic, House

For those of you that are fairly new to raving, Groove Armada might be a little before your time. The duo reached the height of their popularity back in the late 90s/early 2000s behind MASSIVE tunes like “Superstylin’.” So when I read today that they were coming back with a new release for Hypercolour, a label that is known more for the contemporary house of Maya Jane Coles than the big beat basslines of the late 90s UK rave scene, I was taken aback. There was only two ways that this development could turn out: well or shit. Surprisingly, the four track No Knock EP deserves no knocks at all by ending up in the territory of the former rather than the later.

The tunes on the EP, “range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, Moog-bass’d electronic funk. Each sound is lovingly crafted but there’s an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that Hypercolour do so well.” Stream them below ahead of their release on March 26th.

Not only do french fries taste really good, but he sounds really good too. Valentino Cazani aka French Fries, the producer behind one of our top songs of last year, is back with his next single “Yo Vogue.” This one is to see a release on SF’s Dirtybird imprint on March 14th alongside remixes by Claude VonStroke and Christian Martin’s latest pseudonym, Leroy Peppers. Stream a rip of the tune via the YouTube player below. (PS. the video accompanying the rip is nothing short of amazing. If you watch it you’ll know what I am talking about. :) )

INTERVIEW: AVALON EMERSON

posted by Benlander in House, Interview

The Bay Area is one of those few standing cultural hubs in the United States where you can find music of all genres. The rap scene there has given birth to the Hyphy movement as well as weirdos like Lil B. Indie rock is still strong as ever in the Bay, as Girls are the latest buzzband to make a name for SF. And the electronic music scene, with its roots in SF’s burner community, remains extremely diverse to this day.

Enter Avalon Emerson, a young DJ/producer from the Bay who recently caught our ears with her tribal-influenced deep house tune “Warm Up Love.” In fact, we liked it so damn much we reached out for an interview to ask her about her influences and where she gets her unique sound. What started out as a talk about music, quickly ventured into a conversation about her wonderful home, San Francisco, and why it’s so freaking awesome.
