Shinny, shimmering synth-based house music that makes you want to do nothing more but reach for the sky and dance the night away will always have a place in our hearts. It’s been awhile since anything in that field has had a lasting impression on us, but thanks to this song here we can officially say that drought is over. “You Said You Loved Me” is the kind of track that combines everything that is good about dance music. Like, if we had to give someone who didn’t know the most broad example of what “dance music” is, this would be it. From the very first drop, it’s instant elation, and that jovial feeling lasts all the way through to the very last drum kick.

Viceroy is back from his relatively brief absence with an EP that’s both celebratory and tropical in feel. Mr. Afridi is sticking to a signature sound, oscillating between his three primary influences – French house, techno, and disco. He just does it so well. The EP includes a killer remix of Rihanna’s “We Found Love”, but SoundCloud took it down. Viceroy’s given us permission to put it up for download; so this is us sticking out our tongue to SoundCloud. Grab the tunes below for free.

Although he may have left us, the late great DJ Mehdi will always continue to inspire great music no matter where he is. Point in case, check out the incredible mini-mix by A-Trak dedicated to the memory of the French DJ. A-Trak, who was very close to Mehdi, packs in a whole lot of love into this mix, which runs just under four and a half minutes. Hit the play button bellow and reminisce.
A couple days ago, DFA records debuted a beautifully pounding seven-minute remix to The Rapture‘s disco anthem “How Deep Is Your Love”, done by Montreal turntablist A-Trak. Along with the remix, the dj/producer shared the story behind the edit, which apparently involved some help from the late great Dj Mehdi.
From A-Trak:
“I did this remix over the summer, and when I was close to finishing it I played it to my friend, the irreplaceable DJ Mehdi. We often played each other our productions for feedback. As it turns out he and Riton were visiting New York so they stopped by my apartment. I was working on the main version of the remix, the vocal version. I knew I would make a few alternate edits during the mixdown. The funny thing was, Mehdi’s favorite part was the ending! He and Riton suggested that I have that part come in earlier. My reaction was: that would work well for the dub version. And sure enough, when I finished mixing it down I made a dub with their suggestion. When I sent it to Mehdi shortly after, he responded (as a joke) that I should call it “Dub For Mehdi”. He included it in his “Tunisian Summer” mix. And then, as we all know, the unimaginable happened and we lost our dear friend. The least I can do now is name the edit after him. This one’s for you, Memed.”

Before a month ago, we had never heard of Viceroy. In fact, we don’t even remember how we came across his music. One thing is for sure though after one listen, Austen Afridi is no stranger to the french house and disco scene. Few guys can make music on an absolute whim, and those that do usually produce sub-par products. But this dude has been pumping out music and sending it Jonathan’s way almost every week… and the tracks don’t suck in the slightest. Viceroy had some time to sit down with us for an exclusive LFTF interview. We chopped it up with him about how he finds the perfect sample, his very diverse influences, and the classiest of foods.

Here’s an ace new remix from Australia’s very own Bag Raiders, this time reworking Monarchy‘s latest track “I Won’t Let Go.” Slowing down the original for a more mellow feel, the Bag Raiders have given this tune a brooding Italio-club vibe that’s got us fist pumping our hands off. Where was this when we were in Miami last weekend? Stream the tune now below and find it on Monarchy’s I Won’t Let Go remix single out April 11th.
