LAPALUX 40MIN BOILER ROOM LIVE SET

Every once in awhile you hear a Boiler Room set that is seriously special. Last year’s Boiler Room mixes from Lunice and Koreless are two that immediately come to mind. For Boiler Room #77 Ninja Tune brought in up-and-comer Lapalux for a live set that literally knocked me out of my desk chair while I was watching it stream live. The set features mostly material from Lapalux himself as well as a surprise cameo from everyone’s favorite Pretty Mothafucka about half way through. Watch this excellent set below and download it here to take it with you on the go. Oh, and if you haven’t purchased Lapalux’s recently released When You’re Gone EP yet go here now and do that. It’s one of the best things that I’ve heard so far this year.

SCUBA: PERSONALITY (ALBUM STREAM)

Paul Rose aka Scuba has made a name for himself by not confining his sound to one specific genre of electronic music, which is almost ironic, because in the process of doing so he  has crafted a sound that is uniquely and entirely his own. Even on tracks such as last year’s massive “Adrenalin” — with it’s leanings towards lighthearted trance — one can hear Scuba’s signature sound in the chords of the tune. Rose has been making music since the early days of dubstep, but moved to Berlin back in ’07, which is when he began to incorporate elements of classic house and contemporary techno into his work. He has become somewhat of a poster boy for bridging the gap between the two electronic music Meccas of London and Berlin.

In between DJing around the world and making tracks of his own Rose somehow finds time to manage the Hotflush Recordings imprint– the somewhat prolific label that might as well be responsible for forcing journalists and bloggers to coin the genre name “post-dubstep” behind the release of Joy Orbison’s 2009 underground smash “Hyph Mngo.” Hotflush’s next release is Rose’s 3rd LP, Personality, and like every new Scuba release before it Rose has pushed his sound in a new direction. At times the LP recalls the balearic house of Ibiza and the industrial techno of Berlin while not forgetting to inject the signature chords and basslines of the UK underground. This LP is huge and even though it won’t see an actual release until February 27th, you can stream it in it’s entirety below via the embedded SoundCloud player. I know that it’s only February, but don’t be surprised to see this LP on a number of year end lists come December. It really is THAT good.

JACKMASTER SET FROM NUMBERS LONDON 2011

You don’t win DJ Magazine’s breakthrough DJ award for nothing right? Jackmaster is one of the best in the game today, possessing the uncanny ability to mesh all BPM’s and styles together in an unstartling way. And the best part about his sets–at least in our eyes–is his love for the element of surprise. Each of his mixes posses at least five or six total WTF moments that keep things from being too pretentious. Over the weekend Jackmaster released the long promised recording of his set from the Numbers London Warehouse Party this past December.

“We need to say a really big thanks to Black Atlantic and Red Bull, but most of all the troops who stayed till half past 6 in the morning singing along to all the tracks and dancing on top of their mates shoulders. You guys made one of the best parties we’ve ever been involved in so thanks very much. – Jackmaster”

DOWNLOAD DIPLO’S “EXPRESS YOURSELF” EP

Diplo‘s success over the years can be attributed to one pretty simple formula: pull influences from obscure genres from different parts of the world, and recreate them into dancefloor murdering hybrids. For the dude’s newest EP Express Yourself–which comes as his first solo EP in over three years–Diplo utilizes this technique to perfection. This time around, that obscure genre he exploits is New Orleans Bounce, which is a kind of music characterized by energetic hip-hop beats and call and response style dance call-outs. Diplo’s rendition though, ex-nay’s the hip-hop part and substitutes in earth rattling dubstep stabs, taking Bounce to a whole new level. Check out “Express Yourself” below, as well as the EP’s b-side “Bird Is The Word”, which is Diplo’s dubstep take on 60′s surf rock. Both are up for free download.

JAM CITY & MAIN ATTRAKIONZ- THE NITE LIFE

Nightslugs x Green Ova. Jam City x Main Attrakionz. This collaboration is so out of this world we couldn’t have even dreamed it up, and that’s saying something. This–this is just nuts. How a Bay Area stoner rap crew gets in touch with a South London future bass producer is just beyond me, but what’s even more crazy is the outcome.

Move slow think fast,” recites Main Attrakionz at the beginning of the song, almost to  foreshadow the sedated vibe that is to come. The rap duo’s laid back flow works harmoniously with Jam City’s inebriated synths, which periodically flow in and out of earshot atop click-clacking dings and rumbling bass undertones. The song is dark, dingy, and hazy–all the things that represent what both of these artists stand for in their music. It’s somewhat of a perfect match, and quite frankly we’re amazed that we didn’t see this correlation before. Thankfully though, somebody did. Stream the track now below and look out for it releasing via Night Slugs February 27th.

NATASHA KMETO: THE ACHE EP

Dropping Gems, the Portland beat label that we brought to your attention last month, followed up their excellent Gem Drops Two compilation by releasing an EP yesterday by label signee Natasha Kmeto.  This singer/producer recalls Katy B with her excellent vocals, while her productions resemble something more akin to the funky/jazzy/bubbly vibes of Brainfeeder tracks than the bass heavy riddims of grime instrumentals. Having already been rinsed on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Xfm show, Natasha is someone within the electronic music world to keep an eye on and her The Ache EP proves that. Stream Natasha’s take on “futuristic soul” via the Bandcamp player below and download the EP in it’s entirety for whatever price you want over at the Dropping Gems Bandcamp page.
